Halloween is my favorite, so naturally I love to decorate and create fun and spooky vignettes all over my house. This year, on my mantel, I wanted to do a mix of fall and Halloween decor. Today, I’m going to share with you an easy DIY with items you might have laying around the house. Got any plastic pumpkins, paint, and flour? That’s literally all you need to get started. Let’s create some DIY terracotta pumpkins! This easy DIY took me less than 30 minutes to make, and I just love how they turned out! Before we begin, let me share exactly what you need to get started.
What do you need to get started?
The best part about this Halloween DIY is that you can use any kind of pumpkins. I have been collecting some inexpensive plastic jack-o-lanterns to use. I also picked up some orange, white, and brown craft paint. Then, I gathered my paint brushes and some flour and was ready to begin. See, this DIY terracotta pumpkins don’t require a lot of materials to make!
Step 1- Mix Your Paint Colors Together
I picked up my orange, white, and brown craft paint at Hobby Lobby, but you can use any kind that you want. I believe they also sell a terracotta color, but I wanted to create my own mixture.
Next, put your colors in a bowl. I wanted mine to be a really light orange, so I played around with the portions.
Now it’s time to mix your colors together. Optional: You can add flour to the paint to create a little texture to your paint.
Step 2- Paint Your Pumpkin
It’s time to paint! I got my brush and started painting the pumpkin. It instantly started looking like a real terracotta pot. I decided not to paint my stem the same color but that is up to you.
Step 3- Sprinkle Flour On Your Pumpkin
*This part is messy so make sure you put something under the pumpkin* After you let the paint dry for a few minutes, I started sprinkling the flour on. I waited until it was almost dry to add the flour. Then, I started adding it to the top, middle, and bottom. I took a dry paint brush and help distribute it all over the pumpkin. The amount of flour you use is optional. I was very generous with the flour to get the look I was going for.
Terracotta Pumpkin Reveal
Isn’t this terracotta jack-o-lantern family the cutest? I just love how they turned out! It’s amazing how much they actually looks like concrete terracotta. This technique actually makes these inexpensive plastic pumpkins look very expensive.
I layered the pumpkins together and stacked some on old books for extra height.
I created this DIY garland out of some fall stems that I had. It finished off these terracotta pumpkins beautifully. Perfect mix of fall and Halloween decor!
This fun Halloween DIY was inexpensive and so easy. Now, my mantel is all ready for Halloween! Be sure to check out some more Halloween inspo below!
