I am so excited to share a project and room reveal that I have had on my mind for a while. My dining room is a space that gets used as more of a toy/craft room for my kids than a dining room. I have never loved this room and that really bothered me. I like for each room in my home to have it’s own personality. If the space doesn’t inspire me, then I honestly don’t care to spend much time in there. I finally decided to come up with a plan for this room and create a haven for myself and my kids to retreat in. The first step was to add some woodwork, and today I will be sharing how we added a moody board and batten wall and all the steps from the prep using KILZ® Primer to the reveal. I can’t wait to show you how this space turned out!
Dining Room Before
Sorry for the mess, but you get the idea. It is a small space with an oversized hutch, a toy box, and a dining table. It just had too much stuff in it for such a small space. My goal was to rework the space by taking out the hutch and simplifying the room. I want to create more of an office or retreat for us to hang out in and get work done.
Board and Batten Details
I’m calling this woodwork board and batten, but I guess it was just be wall and batten because I did not use boards to cover my wall. There used to be a chair rail there so we did have to repair the wall a little after it was removed. After that, we added the boards which instantly made a big impact in the room. The next step was to prime and paint the room.
Primer and Paint Details
Let’s begin with talking about the paint lineup. For this board and batten project, I am using KILZ® 2 All-Purpose Primer, KILZ TRIBUTE paint in the color Ultra Bright White and Deep Onyx. I wanted to use contrasting paint colors on the top and bottom of the board and batten, but before I began painting, I had to do the most important step which was to prime the room.
Finished priming!! I never said I wasn’t a messy painter, but I get the job done. On the boards and wall, I used KILZ® 2 Primer. I did two coats on the boards and the wall. Two reasons why priming is so important. One is to help bring out the true color of your paint and two, it helps from the wood bleeding through to your paint. Priming also helps ensure professional quality and high end results. KILZ® is my primer of choice. I have used KILZ® on so many different projects around my home but here are two of my favorite home decor DIY’s using KILZ®- My Tips For Painting Your Staircase White and Shiplapped Media Built-ins Tutorial.
After priming was finished, it was time to paint. I started with the top portion of the wall painting it KILZ® TRIBUTE in Ultra Bright White. I have never used this brand of paint before and let me just say, I am sold on this paint!! It covered the walls so well, went on smooth, and it really gave me such a professional look! Next, I got busy painting the boards using the KILZ® TRIBUTE in a color called Deep Onyx. This color is dark, bold, and beautiful, and I can’t wait to show you what it looks like now. Are you ready to see how it turned out?!
Dining Room Reveal
TAADAA! And just like that, I have the dining room/office of my dreams. I love it so much I could cry. This space doesn’t even look like the same room and to think, all it took was a few boards and some paint to dramatically change the way it looks.
I love the contrasting colors and the bold yet calming colors of the paint. The next step was to add some furniture that was smaller and more fitting for this room. I added this small black table that can not only act as a dining room table, but also as a desk or crafting table. In order to create more contrast and some texture, I added these fun wood and wicker chairs and a large oversized pendant.
The last accessory that I added was this beautiful vintage inspired rug. The colors helped bring the room together. The simplicity of this space is exactly what my heart needed. Sometimes less is more and it was totally true in this case.
I now have that space that inspires me and makes me want to go in to retreat. The haven I have been wanting is here and it was all made possibly with a little bit of vision, work, and KILZ® Primer. I hope you enjoyed seeing this room come together as much as I had creating it. I may still add some wall decor or shelves in the future, but for now, it’s finished and I love it!
